Art for Babies - Info

Art for Babies, is designed specifically and in accordance to research. It is designed to help trigger the visual systems. At an aesthetic level, it offers images to stimulate perceptual skills such as visual memory, discrimination, understanding and early analysis. The pictures are inspired by nature and are abstracted, stylised and composed to present an image that your baby will be able to recognise and connect with as she encounters the forms found in a natural environment.

Although it would be far reaching to suggest that babies have the mechanisms required for discerning criticism, they do, apparently have favourite pictures! This is based on their developmental stage and, it would be interesting to suggest, their own tastes. To informally test your baby to establish their own preferred image, response is measured by the length of time babies spend looking at a painting when set beside some neutral stimulus that is matched in overall luminance.

The paintings are designed to present your baby with a stimulating image from birth. As your baby grows, further parts of their development are targeted such as colour emergence and, much later, subjects for early language. As their eyes move from one part of the picture to another, eye-teaming skills are exercised as are cilliary muscles controlling the eye lens. As focus is maintained, sharpness of vision is established. Art for Babies offers an aesthetically welcome visual workout, at this vital sensory stage of life.

For detailed research into visual development in babies, I suggest you use the website links below, but I will roughly précis the parts that I found particularly informative and interesting in Stages.
